Songye Electric Appliances (SONGYE): For 19 Years, Bringing Warmth to Every Hair Around the World

In the summer of 2005, in an old factory building in Hunan, a few young people hung a slightly faded sign, and disassembled old hair dryers were scattered on the workbench. Founder Green Lan firmly stated, “Tools shouldn’t have the coldness of metal—they should feel the warmth of hair, just like we do.” They squatted in the barbershop, observing the hairstylists’ every move and filling three notebooks with customer complaints: “The airflow is too diffuse, making curls difficult to style,” “The buttons are too slippery, making it easy to accidentally touch them with wet hands”—these seemingly minor annoyances became the initial blueprint for Songye’s innovation.

In 2008, when expanding production, Songye resolutely invested in automated precision manufacturing. The lights in the laboratory often burned late into the night as engineers repeatedly polished the heating wire to adjust the air temperature by 0.5°C, and tested the button damping using a human hand model until the grip felt natural. What seemed like obsessive persistence at the time ultimately became hidden in the details of every hair dryer.

In 2012, the first batch of products were shipped overseas. European hairstylists commented on the “lower wind noise and more compliant curls,” while North American users praised the “no slipping even with wet hands.” This honest feedback is more valuable than any other reward. Later, a Middle Eastern customer complained about the hair dryer being too hot to handle. The team spent three months in a 40°C simulation chamber—not for certification, but simply to keep the hair cooler, cooler and cooler.

our story

Today, within Songye’s spacious 5,000-square-meter factory, six intelligent production lines operate smoothly. The magnetic nozzle rotates 360° to fit the curvature of Asian hair, and the intelligent temperature control memory function stems from the needs of European users. The showroom is filled with user experiences from around the world: in a Paris salon, the hair dryer creates a sense of ritual for a bride; on the streets of Tokyo, a girl holds it up for a selfie, her hair shimmering in the warm air.

“We don’t make tools; we make companions,” Green Lan often says. From its first disassembled old hair dryer to its current global sales of millions, Matsuno’s story over the past nineteen years has remained simple: transforming users’ “small complaints” into product “big surprises”; with warmth in every detail, enabling tools to truly understand people.

The blueprint for the next nineteen years has already been laid out in the laboratory. Perhaps it will be a gentler breeze, perhaps a more comfortable button—but what remains unchanged is the original belief:
Let tools better understand people.
